Jomol Mathew, PhD serves as Associate Dean for Informatics and Chief of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences and serves as the Director of the UW Clinical & Health Informatics Institute (CHI²), Director of Informatics for the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), and Associate Director of Informatics for the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
A nationally recognized leader in biomedical informatics, Dr. Mathew is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic vision for informatics, data science and research technology across SMPH. Her research focuses on leveraging real-world data, advanced analytics, and informatics platforms to improve disease prevention, early diagnosis, population health, and patient outcomes. She serves as principal investigator of funded informatics programs including 1) the REACH Program, which is building a statewide environmental epidemiology cohort and advancing innovative approaches to participant-administered biospecimen collection 2) the Wisconsin Health Data Hub, a statewide initiative to integrate epidemiologic and clinical data to generate real-world evidence that supports precision medicine and public health research and 3) the Data Science for Improving Precision Medicine, that builds capacity for advanced data analysis including AI/ML for multimodal biomedical data.
With more than 20 years of experience spanning clinical, and population health informatics, Dr. Mathew has led the development of institution-wide platforms for data integration, visualization, analytics, and secure data exchange. Prior to joining UW–Madison in 2021, she served as Chief Research Informatics Officer at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and held leadership positions at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Partners HealthCare, and New York University School of Medicine. Her work has contributed to innovations in precision medicine, clinical trial recruitment, patient engagement, real-world data use, and digital health technologies.
Through her leadership, Dr. Mathew continues to foster data-driven interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthen clinical and translational research infrastructure, and advance informatics as a foundational component of research, education, discovery and translation to care at UW SMPH and beyond.
